Back in the 90s, I learned about a simple team-building exercise that seems appropriate at this time of the year. Teams that play fall seasons, are entering their playoffs or major tournaments, conference championships, NCAA tournaments. It’s that time of the year, when players are excited, have high expectations and lofty dreams.

They are also wondering if they are good enough, either individually or as a team. Coaches are looking for ways to re-assure them, motivate them and give that extra boost of confidence that could make the difference. [Read more…]

Twenty-one years isn’t really that long. But looking back, we can see that we easily take for granted things we have today that we didn’t have in 1996.

In 1996, AOL CDs were coming in the mail, fax was the fastest method of sending information, and people still had to seek out pay phones when away from landlines. Technology in sports was, of course, fairy non-existent.

Accepting The Fear of Failure

Some recent conversations have reminded me about the importance of failure in player development.

The first example came from Rose Lavelle, a current rising star with the U.S. National Team and a rookie with the Boston Breakers. She told a story about how as a high school freshman her fear of failure nearly derailed a promising career.
